1. 適用範囲
フォント情報交換規格群は，文書符号化方式とは独立にグリフ及びグリフ集合を命名する方式を規定する。フォント資源で用いるグリフ識別子と文書符号化方式とを結び付ける方法は，文書処理系が独自に幾つも設定してよい。
この規格は，フォント資源の体系を規定する。つまり，フォント資源を参照し交換する際に必要な，フォント記述，フォント配置量，グリフ記述及びグリフ配置量の各属性を規定する。
2. 引用規格
次の規格に含まれる規定内容は，この規格の文中での引用によってこの規格の規定となる。各規格には，この規格の出版の際に有効であった版を表示してある。どの規格も改訂を受けるので，この規格に従った合意を形成するに際しては，それぞれの規格の最新版を調べて適用する。現在有効な国際規格の登録管理は，ISO及びIECの構成員が行っている。
