1.Scope
This Japanese Industrial Standard specifies scalers for use in dentistry,hereinafter referred to as the “scalers”.
2Performance
2.1Hardness When a test is performed by the testing method of 7.3，thehardness of the end part shall be not lower than 600 in Vickers hardness (Hv).
2.2PlatingThe plated coating shall conform to the plating grade 3 of class1 or class 2 for iron and steel specified in JIS H 8617 or be superior thereto inquality.
3.Construction
3.1Joint The joint between.the handle section and the working part shallprovide a perfect connection by welding.
4. Dimensions
The dimensions of scalers shall conform to Table 1.
5.Appearance
Scalers shall have a good color tone and luster，be free from cuts，rust,burrs,and other detrimental , defects，and be finished well.
6.Material and Processing Method
Scalers shall be made of SKs 2 or sKs 3 of JIs G 4404 and be plated withnickel or nickel-chromium.However，the handle section may be made of a materialconforming to JIS G 3101.
7.Testing
7.1Test Items
The test items for scalers shall be as follows:
( 1)Appearance，dimensions，and construction inspection
(2) Hardness test
(3)Plating test
7.2Appearance,Dimensions，and Construction Inspection
Inspection shall be
made for the items of 5.，4.,and 3.
7.3 Hardness Test The hardness test shall be applied to the working part andmeasurement shall be made by using a hardness tester.However，where a testercannot be used，judgment on hardness shall be made by using files.
7.4Plating Test The plating test shall be preformed by the method specifiedin JIS H 86i7.
8.Marking
Scalers shall be marked with the manufacturer’s name or its symbol.
